Epilogue

Brooke

“Congratulations, Brooke!”

I stared at the silver banner hanging on the wall and smiled. My best friend had outdone herself. The tables were decked out with centerpieces and linen napkins, and there was a huge cake located in the back corner. Everything was silver and black, my favorite colors. I couldn’t believe she’d gone all out like this for what was supposed to be a small get-together in the private dining room of Jose’s, one of my favorite soul-food spots, to celebrate my promotion, which was finally official.

My coworkers seemed happy for me, including members of upper management, who’d all emailed me. I was grateful for their well wishes and votes of confidence. It made the office a pleasant place to be, which was a good thing, because it was now where I spent nearly all my time. I had become a workaholic. I would come in early in the morning and leave when I could barely keep my eyes open at night. It wasn’t because I had to. Brandon had made my transition into management easy, and I was pretty much familiar with my new roles and responsibilities. But working nonstop was a much-needed distraction from my personal life. I no longer enjoyed going out to the clubs or bars. I hardly ever partied with Emory these days. The only two things that brought me pleasure were working and shopping. And the more I worked, the more I was able to shop. And both working and shopping helped me not to think about him.

“How does it look?” Emory’s voice came from behind me.

I turned around and admired the adorable black cocktail dress she wore, along with a beautiful silver necklace, which was quite a statement piece, and gorgeous silver heels.

“Everything looks amazing. I’m wowed by it all,” I said. “I can’t believe you did all of this. It’s really too much, Em.”

“It’s not. And you are the one who looks damn amazing. That dress is everything,” she said.

“She ain’t lying,” Brandon said as he walked over to us.

“You don’t look so bad yourself,” I told him. He was looking dapper, as usual, in a black suit, which I knew had to be custom made.

“You know I had to look presentable at the turnup.” He popped his collar and raised an eyebrow.

“Technically, this should be a celebration for you too,” I said. “You’re the one with the big title now.”

“True, but nah, tonight is all about you. And this is for you.” He handed me the gift bag that he was carrying.

“A gift? Wow. Thanks, Brandon.” I gave him a quick hug.

“I’ll take that,” Emory said as she reached for the bag. “We do have a gift table.”

“You’ve thought of everything.” I laughed.

“So, I guess you didn’t tell her the news yet, huh?” Brandon whispered after Emory walked away.

“No, I haven’t said anything to her. I figured you wanted to tell her,” I said.

He shrugged. “Well, I guess we can tell her together.”

I looked over at the doorway and saw Miss Helen and a few more people from the office coming in.
